NUC Grants Full Accreditation to Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute's Postgraduate Programmes
In a landmark development for postgraduate education in Africa, the National Universities Commission (NUC) in Nigeria has officially accredited nine Master's degree and five PhD programmes offered by the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (PAULESI), hosted at the University of Ibadan, Nigeria. The accreditation, effective from July 13, 2026, and announced on August 7, 2026, marks the culmination of years of strategic planning and a significant milestone in the Institute's journey toward academic excellence, continental relevance, and the realization of the African Union's Agenda 2063.
Prior to this historic accreditation, PAULESI had operated under the academic umbrella of its host institution, the University of Ibadan, leveraging its existing accreditation status. However, the Institute's leadership recognized that independent accreditation was a strategic imperative to validate the quality of education, uphold the credibility and integrity of the Institute's academic offerings, ensure that degrees are recognized by employers and academic institutions across the continent and beyond, protect the investment of students through quality assurance, and foster trust in the educational system among stakeholders. These imperatives necessitated the comprehensive process that has now culminated in this success.
The newly accredited programmes span critical disciplines addressing Africa's developmental priorities across life sciences, earth sciences, health sciences, and agricultural sciences. The programmes that received full accreditation are Plant Breeding, Medicinal Plants Research and Drug Development, Petroleum Geoscience, Mineral Exploration, Vaccine Production and Quality Control, Avian Medicine, Reproductive Health Science, Sports Management and Policy Development, and Environmental Management.
Before the accreditation exercise, the PAU delegation led by the Rector, Prof Jean Koulidiati and accompanied by the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Prof Kayode Adebowale visited the Executive Secretary of the NUC in Abuja to formally seek accreditation of programmes offered at PAULESI. The Executive Secretary assured the delegation of the Commission's full support and immediately constituted a joint team comprising representatives from PAULESI and the NUC to drive the process. In preparation, the NUC dispatched Self Study Forms, which were meticulously completed by the Heads of each programme, providing comprehensive information on programme objectives, curriculum design, faculty qualifications, student support services, infrastructure, and learning outcomes. Attached documents were added to serve as evidence substantiating the information provided in the study forms, as requested by the NUC.
From May 17 to 20, 2026, a delegation of 26 academic and professional experts, organized across eight specialized accreditation panels, visited PAULESI to conduct the Institute's first-ever independent postgraduate accreditation exercise. The comprehensive evaluation involved presentations of Self Study Forms, scrutiny of supporting documents, physical inspection of offices, the library, and laboratories, interviews with students, staff and programme coordinators, engagement with faculty members, and a courtesy visit to the Vice Chancellor. The panels evaluated each programme against rigorous quality benchmarks, ensuring alignment with global best practices and strengthening academic standards in Nigerian universities.
This accreditation represents a defining moment for PAULESI, establishing the Institute as an independent, internationally recognized postgraduate institution capable of awarding its own degrees. The five-year validation affirms that the Institute meets and maintains the highest standards of postgraduate education, enhancing its reputation and attractiveness to top-tier students, faculty, and research partners from across Africa and beyond. The success of this accreditation extends to the entire Pan African University, strengthening the reputation of the African Union's flagship higher education initiative and demonstrating that PAU institutions can meet and exceed the rigorous standards of national accreditation bodies. This milestone also underscores the African Union Commission's commitment to quality education as a driver of continental development. With this accreditation, PAULESI is instrumental to the achievement of Agenda 2063; the African Union's transformative vision for the continent.
