Bridging Minds, Building Futures: A Strategic Conversation Between RUFORUM and PAUSTI Leadership

The Regional Universities Forum for Capacity Building in Agriculture (RUFORUM) continues to strengthen its footprint across African centers of excellence, most recently through a visit by its Executive Secretary, Prof. Patrick Okori, to the Pan African University Institute for Basic Sciences, Technology and Innovation (PAUSTI). Unlike formal high-level meetings, this engagement took the form of a casual yet impactful conversation between two institutional heads, creating space for open dialogue on shared priorities in advancing science, innovation, and capacity building across the continent.
During the discussion, Prof. Okori, emphasized the importance of collaboration among African universities as a key driver of transformation. He highlighted RUFORUM’s commitment to fostering networks that enable knowledge exchange, joint research, and innovation ecosystems capable of addressing critical challenges such as food security, climate resilience, and youth empowerment. The informal setting allowed for a candid exchange of ideas on how institutions can work more closely to accelerate impact.
The Director of PAUSTI, Prof. Losenge Turoop, provided a brief introduction to the institute, outlining its mandate as a continental hub for advanced training in science, technology, engineering, and innovation. He spoke about PAUSTI’s growing role in nurturing highly skilled graduates and its commitment to research that responds to Africa’s development needs, positioning the institute as a key player within the Pan-African University network.
Prof. Turoop further highlighted PAUSTI’s vision to develop under the RUFORUM framework, pointing to opportunities for strengthening research capacity, expanding academic partnerships, and enhancing innovation-driven programs. He noted that closer engagement with RUFORUM could unlock new pathways for collaboration, including access to networks, joint initiatives, and resource mobilization that would benefit both students and faculty.
The conversation concluded on a shared note of optimism and commitment to deepening ties between RUFORUM and PAUSTI. Even in its simplicity, the engagement underscored the power of dialogue in shaping meaningful partnerships. As African institutions continue to align their efforts, such interactions serve as a reminder that innovation and progress often begin with a single, purposeful conversation.
