Prof. Mohammed Belhocine, undertook, in the margins of his work in the city of Tlemcen, to meet with Algerian government authorities in the capital Algiers in order to exchange views on issues relating to their respective mandates.

On 26 May 2022, he was received in audience by the Minister of National Education, Mr. Abdelhakim Belaabed, warmly welcomed him.

During the discussions, the Commissioner handed over a copy of the "CESA-16-25 Indicators Manual" and some relevant documents of ESTI Department regarding Education.

He made a presentation of the various strategic frameworks put in place by the African Union Commission in the field of education, namely STISA-2024, the TVET Strategy, CESA 16-25 and even the African Union Agenda 2063.

The Commissioner also informed his host about the African Union Continental Teachers' Award inaugurated in 2019 and looked forward to Algeria's participation in the competition.

In order to better focus the Minister on the main purpose of his visit, the Commissioner also made a presentation on the Pan African University (PAU), the AU's flagship programme which between 2012 and 2021 has trained 2582 students (830 male and 1752 female students) and which has over 1617 graduates in the same period, of which 1081 are male and 536 female.

Before concluding his remarks, the Commissioner pleaded for the granting of academic internships to students of the Pan African University Institute of Water and Energy Sciences including Climate Change (PAUWES).

On his part, the Minister shared Algeria's experience during the period of COVID-19, where the effects of this pandemic on the smooth running of courses had to be mitigated, leading to the switch to virtual teaching. He welcomed Algeria's estimated more than 90% school enrolment rate.

Mr Abdelhakim Belaabed also spoke of the reform of the Algerian education system underway, with particular emphasis on the teaching of mathematics.

For him, artificial intelligence should also have a prominent place in this education system. One of the major innovations of this reform, he stressed, is the introduction of the Art Baccalaureate with courses such as cinema, music, etc.

He concluded by noting the need to introduce physical education at primary level and to provide schools with appropriate sports facilities.

The Commissioner was delighted to learn more about the Algerian education system and welcomed the reform and its innovations.

According to the Minister of National Education, the Algerian government is committed to the implementation of Sustainable Development Goal 4.
The two sides agreed to strengthen their cooperation and the Minister invited the Commissioner to take part in the education conference to be held in Algeria.

The Commissioner expressed his wish that Algeria would share its rich experience in education in the Continental Annual Activities Report (RACA).
