During a working session, Dr. Hamdy and his team made a presentation on the mandate and missions of STRC including its current activities.

STRC is a specialized institution of the African Union, which aims to promote the role of science, technology and research in strengthening the integration, cooperation and development of African Union Member States. More specifically, it aims at:

- contributing to research in science and technology including agricultural sciences medical sciences, soil and botanical sciences, environmental sciences, industrial and technological sciences, and natural sciences like physics, chemistry, etc.,

- fostering partnerships and engaging in training opportunities to maximize the impact of science research on the growth and development of African Union Member States.

Discussing the strategic plan and statutes of the African Scientific Research and Innovation Council (ASRIC), Dr. Hamdy raised some challenges such as budget allocation and human resource management.

The current programmes, tasks and activities of the STRC were also presented.

Taking the floor, the Commissioner emphasized the need to carry out an objective evaluation of results, if necessary through an independent evaluation, in order to remain focused on the structure's missions. He also emphasised the need to adopt a systemic approach, in particular by seeking synergistic links with the Pan-African University in order to become a back up and service provider structure to the PAU.

The Commissioner concluded by urging the STRC to continue to work in collaboration with other African Union institutions, such as CDC-Africa in relation to health research, or PAULESI, given their geographical proximity.
