Under Prof. Zerga's Leadership, 2nd PAU Conference Success Paves Way for PAUWES Curriculum Innovation
The successful conclusion of the 2nd Pan African University International Conference in Tlemcen has reaffirmed PAUWES's position as a leading center of excellence for water, energy, and climate change research in Africa. Under the visionary leadership of Prof. Abdellatif Zerga, the two-day gathering (December 1-2, 2025) brought together researchers, scholars, and students from across the continent to advance Africa's sustainability agenda through knowledge, policy, and innovation.
Prof. Zerga's strategic leadership was evident throughout the conference, from the seamless coordination of five thematic areas to the quality of keynote presentations and the depth of research showcased. His ability to convene continental experts while maintaining PAUWES's commitment to African-led solutions has been instrumental in positioning the institute as a hub for transformative research. Since assuming leadership of PAUWES, Prof. Zerga has overseen the graduation of over 200 students, launched Africa's first Climate Change Engineering program, and forged strategic partnerships including the recent collaboration agreement with LASAL, the Algerian Space Agency, signed during the conference opening.
The conference addressed critical challenges facing Africa, where 411 million people lack access to basic drinking water and nearly 600 million live without electricity. Researchers presented solutions across water security, renewable energy, health innovation, and governance frameworks - demonstrating the breadth of expertise emerging from African institutions.
Building on this momentum, PAUWES convened a Masters curriculum validation workshop the day after the conference concluded. This strategic session brought together international experts specifically invited to ensure PAUWES programs remain at the cutting edge of global academic standards while remaining responsive to Africa's unique challenges. The timing was deliberate - leveraging the intellectual energy and collaborative spirit generated by the conference to undertake critical curriculum review work.
Additionally, PAUWES hosted planning sessions for its doctoral program expansion, signaling the institute's ambition to train not just masters-level professionals but the next generation of African research leaders and academics who will shape the continent's knowledge production for decades to come.
The success of the 2nd PAU International Conference, coupled with the immediate pivot to curriculum innovation, exemplifies the dynamic, forward-thinking approach that characterizes PAUWES under Prof. Zerga's stewardship.
