PAULESI Seeks NUC Accreditation for Programmes to Strengthen Continental Impact

A distinguish delegation from the Pan African University (PAU) along with the Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, today, 20th February visited the Executive Secretary of National Universities Commission (NUC) in Abuja. This visit was conducted on behalf of the Pan African University Life and Earth Sciences Institute (Including Health and Agriculture), PAULESI, hosted at the University of Ibadan. The delegation included PAU Rector Prof. Jean Koulidiati, PAU Vice Rector Prof. Bolanle Idowu Akeredolu-Ale, University of Ibadan Vice Chancellor Prof. Kayode O. Adebowale, and PAULESI Director Prof. Mubo A. Sonibare.

Upon their arrival, the Executive Secretary, Prof. Abdullahi Yusufu Ribadu (FCVSN), graciously welcomed the delegates and introduced them to his team. The Vice Chancellor of the University of Ibadan provided a formal introduction of the PAU representatives, offered an overview of the Pan African University’s establishment and its affiliated institutes, and stated the purpose of the visit, which was the accreditation mission of PAULESI.

The primary objective of the visit was to seek the accreditation of programmes offered by PAULESI. Since the establishment of the Pan African University, PAULESI has relied on the accreditation of its host institution, the University of Ibadan, leveraging the accreditation of the host departments for each of its programmes. However, obtaining direct accreditation from the appropriate governing body is essential for all universities, as it validates the quality of education and ensures that degrees are recognized by employers and other institutions across the continent and beyond. Accreditation serves as a stamp of approval that guarantees credibility, protects the investment of students, and fosters trust in the educational system. It was these critical imperatives that necessitated the visit.

The delegation emphasized the necessity of securing direct accreditation for PAULESI's programmes to uphold the credibility and integrity of the Institute's academic offerings. They also highlighted the challenges faced by alumni due to the absence of direct programme accreditation, which has, in some cases, hindered the recognition of their qualifications.

In his remarks, the Executive Secretary assured the delegation of the Commission's full support for PAULESI's accreditation mission. To demonstrate an immediate commitment to this goal, the Executive Secretary constituted a joint team comprising representatives from PAULESI and NUC members to drive the accreditation process forward.

The courtesy visit marked a significant step toward securing formal recognition for PAULESI's academic programmes by the National Universities Commission. With the Executive Secretary's prompt assurance of support and the swift formation of a joint technical team, the delegation expressed confidence that the accreditation process would commence. This milestone, once achieved, will not only enhance the credibility and global competitiveness of PAULESI's graduates but also strengthen the Pan African University's mandate of delivering world-class postgraduate education tailored to Africa's developmental needs.
